Overview

The Great Canadian Landscaping Company (GCLC) is looking for a Softscape Lead Hand with knowledge and experience to construct and maintain the horticultural elements of landscaping projects/installations. Details of the position as follows:

  • Term of employment: full time, indeterminate
  • Salary and weekly hours: $24.00/hour at 40 hours/week
  • Company address: 118 Garden Avenue, North Vancouver
  • Location of work: various locations – our projects are all over Lower Mainland and along the sea to sky highway
  • Language of work: English

This position will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Assist the Softscape Foreman in managing the execution of softscape projects, equipment requirements and timing to ensure completion of job(s) within deadlines
  • Assist in the preparation of jobsites prior to the beginning of a project
  • Plan, coordinate, plant horticultural elements including trees, shrubs, flowers, and bulbs
  • Manage and maintain (weed, prune, and trim) trees and plants
  • Apply various lawn care products to ensure health of landscape environments, including fertilizers, soil, water, cut grass, etc.
  • Cart and spread topsoil and other required materials
  • Lay sod or seed; grading (soil); and tree staking
  • Perform lawn maintenance using lawn mowers, trimmers, aerators and power rakes
  • Move and transport materials using shovels, wheelbarrows, carts, dollies and manual lifting
  • Perform preventative maintenance on tools and equipment by conducting inspections, lubricating, and cleaning on a daily basis
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment at all times
  • Comply with all company policies and regulations
  • Maintain and enforce standards of cleanliness and organization in assigned trucks, trailers, equipment, jobsites, and shop/yard areas
  • Ensure that all work activities are carried out in a safe and efficient manner, and that all crew members are in compliance with government and company PPE standards
  • Assist in managing safety, quality and productivity of work at sites
  • Enforce and work in accordance with all local health and safety laws and regulations at shop/yard and on jobsites
  • Assist with Employee training when required
  • Communicate with customers in a polite and courteous manner

We are looking for candidates with the following details:

  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent
  • Minimum 1-2 years’ experience in horticulture/softscape
  • Plant knowledge and identification, and experience in plant care
  • Competent in the use of power tools (pruners, sod cutters, sprayers, rototillers, lawn mowers, line trimmers, blowers, etc.)
  • Capable of operating required equipment and tools in a safe and responsible manner
  • Effective communication skills (both verbal and written)
  • Ability to work under pressure and tight deadlines
  • Time management skills
  • Knowledge of specific materials, methods, tools and equipment required to complete various softscape practices
  • Physically fit with strong stamina
  • Basic measurement and calculation skills
  • Ability to follow safe working procedures
  • Excellent observation skills and a strong attention to detail
  • Good analytical and problem solving skills
  • Ability to work both independently with little supervision, and as part of a team
  • Knowledge of specific materials, methods, tools and equipment required to complete various landscape/construction practices
  • Speak, read, and write English
  • Valid driver’s license an asset
  • Ability to access various project locations by personal transportation if required
